Valtrex is a valacyclovir-based antiviral medication used for treatment of certain herpes infections, e.g. genital herpes, herpes zoster (shingles) and cold sores on lips or face caused by herpes. It works by preventing viral replication and attacking the existing virus, which helps the body to suppress it naturally by means of its own immune system. Usage of Valtrex does not cure herpes completely, yet reduces the duration and frequency of outbreaks.
Side effects of Valtrex might include:
• allergic reaction, e.g. swollen face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, hives;
• seizures/convulsions, tremor;
• impaired vision/speech;
• weight gain/loss of appetite, increased thirst;
• joint/lower back/stomach/menstrual pain;
• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody);
• drowsiness, dizziness, muscle weakness;
• headache;
• mood and mental changes, e.g. hallucinations, trouble concentrating, depression, aggression, agitation, confusion;
• pale/yellow skin;
• urination changes;
• red spots on the skin;
• fever, stuffy nose, sore throat.
To decrease the risk of developing side effects, it is required that your doctor authorized treatment with Valtrex if you:
• suffer from or have a history of kidney/blood/immune system disorders, HIV, bone marrow/kidney transplantation;
• are allergic or hypersensitive to valacyclovir or any other substances;
• are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to have a baby;
• are taking other medications containing probenecid and cimetidine.
Symptoms of Valtrex overdose are not known; if you develop any unusual symptoms or any side effects become persistent and bothersome, report them to your doctor immediately.
