Flagyl is a metronidazole-based antibiotic used to treat infections of skin, stomach, joints, vagina and respiratory tract caused by bacteria. It is not effective for vaginal yeast infection or viral ones , e.g. flu or colds.
Side effects of Flagyl might include:
    • urination problems, e.g. pain;
    • vaginal irritation and/or discharge;
    • confusion, cramps;
    • clumsiness, weakness or numbness;
    • unusual pain in hands/feet;
    • headache;
    • nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach or stomach pain;
    • metallic taste or dark/white patches in the mouth;
    • symptoms of infection, e.g. fever;
    • seizures;
    • drowsiness or dizziness;
    • allergic reactions, e.g. swollen face, lips or tongue, skin rash or hives.
To decrease the risk of developing side effects, it is required that your doctor authorized treatment with Flagyl if you:
    • were prescribed Flagyl for treatment of a sexually transmitted disease: if have a sexual partner, he/she may also need treatment;
    • suffer from or have a history of nervous system/blood/liver disorders, seizures, fungal or yeast infections;
    • are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to have a baby;
    • are allergic or hypersensitive to metronidazole or other medications, foods or substances;
    • are taking medications/injections or substances containing alcohol, disulfiram, paclitaxel, sertraline, ritonavir, amprenavir, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, phenobarbital, warfarin, cimetidine, lithium or phenytoin;
    • are smoking or taking any prescription/non-prescription medications or doing illegal drugs as they may interact with Flagyl.
Overdose of Flagyl causes severe effects similar to the side effects, and must be reported to the doctor right away. Avoid alcohol and sexual contacts during and within 3 days after treatment; also avoid operating machines or driving until you are sure of the effect Flagyl has on you.
