Clomid is a non-steroid anti-estrogen clomiphene-based drug used for treatment of infertility. It works by stimulating production of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormones that contribute to stimulation of eggs production in the ovaries. Clomid specifically binds with estrogen receptor in ovary and pituitary, balances estrogen level in body (increasing if it is low and decreasing if it is too high) and prepares body for pregnancy. If taken in small doses, Clomid increases secretion of gonadotropins, while large doses slow their secretion; however, it may also be used in men with infertility caused by reduced sperm production.
Side effects of Clomid are:
• abdominal or pelvic pain as a result of ovarian enlargement;
• nausea, vomiting or diarrhea;
• impaired or blurred vision;
• headache, dizziness, feeling light-headed;
• blood in urine;
• swelling of lips, tongue or face (as symptoms of allergy);
• headache.
To decrease the risk of developing side effects, it is required that your doctor authorized treatment with Clomid if you:
• are pregnant;
• are hypersensitive or allergic to clomiphene;
• suffer from liver/kidney failure, mental depression, ovarian cysts, pituitary tumor or hypofunction, metrorrhagia of unknown etiology, neoplasms of genital organs, endometriosis. thrombophlebitis or ovarian failure with hyperprolactinaemia;
• are already taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, herbal or food supplements.
Overdose of Clomid causes symptoms similar to its side effects listed above. If you develop any of them and there is a possibility you have taken a double or extra dose of the medication, inform your doctor immediately.
