Bactrim is a synthetic sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim-based antibacterial medication used for treatment of ear, urinary tract infections and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Sulfamethoxazole works as an inhibitor of dihydrofolic acid, which takes part in both human and bacterial, and trimethoprim blocks dihydrofolic acid from transforming into tetrahydrofolic. Thus, Bactrim breaks biochemical cycle of microorganisms, which makes it effective against pneumococci, E.coli, Proteus, typhoid fever, bacillus dysentery, streptococci and staphylococci. However, it proved ineffective against spirochetes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Therefore, Bactrim can be prescribed for treatment of pneumonia and other conditions caused by bacterial infections, such as infections of gastrointestinal, urogenital and respiratory systems, including post-surgery ones.
Side effects of Bactrim are not many; the most common one is diarrhea, like in any antibiotic medicines; yet, it is required to inform your doctor if you develop allergic reactions like hives, itching, swelling, pale skin, sore throat, hallucinations, slow heart rate, stomach pain, nausea, urination issues.
To decrease the risk of developing side effects, it is required that your doctor authorized treatment with Bactrim if you:
• are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to have a baby;
• suffer from asthma, anemia caused by folic acid deficiency anemia, diarrhea, severe disorders or have a history of heart/kidney failure;
• are allergic to any of Bactrim components, especially the active ingredients;
• are already taking prescription or non-prescription medications, especially those containing dofetilide or methenamine; antidiabetic medications, live vaccines, tricyclic antidepressants, cyclosporine, digoxin, medications increasing potassium level, so-called “blood thinners”, etc.
It is strongly recommended to avoid sunlight or getting tanned during treatment.
Overdose of Bactrim may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, blood in urine, fainting, drowsiness, headache, yellow skin or eyes (jaundice). Those symptoms must be reported to your doctor immediately.
