Albendazole is an anthelmintic medication used for treatment of tapeworm infections.
Side effects of Albendazole might include:
    • nausea;
    • headache;
    • stomach pain;
    • vomiting.
While those may or may not be reported to your doctor, some other side effects are potentially harmful and often dangerous and should be reported to your doctor or physician as soon as possible, e.g.:
    • severe dizziness/headache that do not appear with reducing daily dosage (this must be done with the help of your doctor after reporting the side effects);
    • urination issues or dark urine;
    • fever and/or sore throat;
    • skin issues, e.g. redness, swelling, peeling skin or blisters on its surface;
    • seizures or convulsions;
    • impaired vision;
    • jaundice (yellow skin or eyes);
    • allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, swollen face/tongue/lips; rash or hives;
To decrease the risk of developing side effects, it is required that your doctor authorized treatment with Albendazole if you:
    • are allergic to foods, drugs, preservatives, dyes, any ingredients of Albendazole or benzimidazoles;
    • are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to have a baby;
    • are already taking any dietary or herbal supplements, prescription or non-prescription drugs, especially those containing praziquantel, dexamethasone, cimetidine or theophylline known to interact with Albendazole and increase side effects of each other;
    • suffer from liver/bone marrow/eye diseases (e.g. retinal lesions), if your white blood cells or platelets amount is lowered for any reason;
    • are pregnant as Albendazole may affect fetus.
Another general precaution is to be careful not to take alcohol during treatment with Albendazole, as its side effects may be increased causing severe dizziness. Some other medications may work in the same way, therefore, your doctor must be aware of all the factors above and prescribe Albendazole in a dosage that would be safe for you.
