Accutane is an isotretinoid medication used for treatment of severe acne and some other conditions. Its active ingredient is derived from vitamin A and is naturally present in human body but in small quantities.
Side effects of Accutane are rare, as the medication was manufactured for long-term treatment. However, it can cause some of the following symptoms:
• allergic reactions (sometimes severe) or skin rashes;
• vomiting, constipation or diarrhea;
• dizziness, drowsiness, and headache.
It is recommended to talk to your doctor if any of those are persistent.
To decrease the risk of developing side effects, it is required that your doctor authorized treatment with Accutane if you:
• are allergic to any foods, medications or other substances;
• suffer from osteoporosis, kidney/liver/heart conditions; bone disorders; diabetes; asthma;
• are already taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, tetracycline antibiotics, steroids (e.g. prednisone), anti-seizure phenytoin-containing medications, vitamin A or medications containing it;
• are sensitive to any ingredients of Accutane;
• are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to have a baby;
• have a history of being hypersensitive to Accutane or other retinoids.
Apart from that, overdose of Accutane may cause heartbeat issues (irregular or too fast); feeling light-headed; chest pain or nausea.
