Retin-A cream is a tretinoin-based medication used for improvement of skin appearance and texture. Its active ingredient tretinoin is a vitamin A derivative and is used for treatment of acne when applied topically; it works on skin epidermis and dermis as a mild chemical peel and increases skin cells regeneration reducing wrinkles, darkened and rough skin areas and damage caused by exposure to sun.
Certain side effects of Retin-A can be dangerous and must be reported to your doctor immediately. They are:
• allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, swollen throat, tongue, lips and face, or skin hives;
• skin burning, stinging, itching, redness, dryness or irritation (must be reported if severe and prolonged);
• skin color change.
Some other side effects are common but must be reported to your doctor if persistent, e.g. increased skin sensitivity to wind, cold and sunlight.
It is strongly recommended to begin treatment on a small area or skin and continue if no irritation appeared. Avoid being exposed to sun or ultraviolet, especially in the beginning of treatment with Retin-A; if that is not possible, always apply sunscreen.
During the first weeks of treatment skin problems may seem to worsen, as small cysts in the skin are eliminated faster than usual. This is a normal skin reaction and is considered to be a side effect.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, treatment with Retin-A must be authorized by your doctor.
